Ingredients for Cilantro Mint Chutney
Cilantro – Fresh cilantro leaves (coriander leaves) are one of the star ingredients of this chutney. Be sure to include the tender stems of the cilantro leaves as well. You can also try substituting them with fresh flat-leaf parsley.
Mint – Using fresh mint leaves is a must in this recipe for that unique cooling flavor. You can make this chutney with just mint leaves alone.
Green Chili – I used 2 dark green, spicy green chilies. You can also use jalapeno or Serrano chilies. Feel free to adjust the spiciness according to your preference.
Ginger – to add a hint of punchy flavor.
Lemon/Lime juice or Tamarind pulp – to add some tanginess to the fresh zesty chutney.
Roasted Cumin powder – It is a must-have ingredient. You can either use cumin powder or cumin seeds.
Salt and Sugar – to balance the flavors of the chutney, you can try using black salt or rock salt in the recipe for enhanced flavor.
How to Make Cilantro Mint Chutney
Step 1 – Prepare the Ingredients
To begin, thoroughly wash the cilantro and mint leaves. Remove and discard any hard stems from the mint leaves. However, use the stems of the cilantro. Roughly chop the cilantro leaves and set them aside.
Wash, peel the ginger, and roughly chop. Remove the stems from the green chilies.
Step 2 – Blend the Chutney
In a blender jar, transfer the washed cilantro and mint. Also, add the roughly chopped ginger, green chilies, roasted cumin powder, salt, sugar, lime juice (or tamarind pulp), and water (or ice cubes), as needed.
Blend the ingredients until you achieve a smooth consistency. If the mixture is too thick, you can add more water as needed to reach your desired consistency.
Taste the chutney and adjust the seasoning if necessary. You can add more salt, sugar, or lime juice if you like.
How to Store Green Sauce
Homemade cilantro mint chutney will stay fresh for up to 4 days when stored in an airtight container or jar in the refrigerator.
If making it in bulk, freeze it in an ice tray or small containers. Before using, defrost it one at a time.
This way you can enjoy this Green Chutney whenever you like!
Variations for Indian Green Chutney
Grated Coconut – will not only make the chutney thick but it will also add a bit of creaminess. This variation will go well as a spread for a sandwich or burger.
