Green Moong Dal Recipe (Mung Bean Curry)

Ingredients
  

To Pressure Cook

  • 1 cup green moong dal (whole green gram)
  • 1 no green chili chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon oil
  • 2 cups water

To Temper the Dal

  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 no onion medium-sized, finely chopped
  • 2 nos tomatoes finely chopped
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder adjust to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
  • salt to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon garam masala
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions
 

  • Wash the green moong dal thoroughly and soak it in hot water for about 30 minutes.

  • In a pressure cooker, add the soaked moong dal, water, turmeric powder, oil, and chopped green chili. Cook for about 3-4 whistles or until the dal is soft and cooked through.

  • Heat a pan, add oil, and add cumin seeds. Once they splutter, add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute until the raw smell disappears.

  • Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown.

  • Add chopped tomatoes and cook until the tomatoes are soft

  • Next, add turmeric powder, red chili powder, cumin, and coriander powder. Cook until the oil begins to separate.

  • Add the cooked dal, salt, and garam masala. Mix everything well. Adjust the consistency with water if needed.

  • Let the dal simmer for 5-10 minutes on low heat, and let the flavors meld.
  • Garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Serve hot with rice or Indian bread of your choice.

Notes

  1. You can add some veggies such as green peas, carrots, and sweet potatoes.
  2. Along with chopped coriander leaves, you can also add mint leaves.
